Holistic Nutrition
What is Holistic Nutrition?
Holistic nutrition recognizes the intersection of factors that contribute to a person’s health – from the food they eat, the lifestyle they lead, their bio-individuality, their environment, their state of mind and so on. The uniqueness of the whole person is considered when seeking to restore balance and natural function.
What are the Foundations of Health?
Restoring this balance and function within the body can be supported through a foundational approach, or what is referred to as the Foundations of Health.
This is the approach I take in my work.
The Foundations of Health (or simply “the Foundations”) are:
- Nutrient-dense diet
- Sleep
- Stress management
- Digestion
- Blood sugar regulation
When the Foundations are supported, we are in a better position to prevent poor health.
Approaching health foundationally often means returning to:
- Whole food. Properly grown, prepared, and eaten (and enjoyed, too, of course!)
- Our instincts and innate wisdom, and trusting the savvy hunter-gatherer that lives inside each one of us that knows the way, and what we need to eat, live, and thrive.
- Honouring our bio-individuality and recognizing we are all unique.
Once we make this return, the door to optimal health has the opportunity to open.
Understanding the picture your health
In holistic nutrition, it’s important to gain an understanding of the unique aspects of your health and look for clues of deficiencies, imbalances, and/or blockages so that together, we create a plan of the diet and lifestyle changes that will support a restoration of balance.
In my individualized client work, we leverage the following:
Initial Interview Questionnaire
During the Initial Interview, I’ll seek to gain a better understanding of your current health concerns and the full picture of your health history and lifestyle from every angle so that we can start connecting the dots.
Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire (NAQ)
The NAQ is a comprehensive questionnaire that allows us to delve deeply into each body system to help us uncover areas of weakness or deficiency, aids us in understanding your health concerns and areas of imbalance, and therefore where we need to target our efforts.
Food & Mood Journal
Helps to understand typical eating, movement, energy, and mood patterns in order to make recommendations for beneficial dietary changes, as well as in key lifestyle areas such as stress management, sleep, hygiene, and intentional movement
My role
My role is to inspire you to play an active role in your wellness and learn how to balance your own Foundations.
I am your educator, your cheerleader, and patient supporter as you establish new rituals within your diet and lifestyle, creating a new foundation underneath you.
You carry the flame – the desire for change – and we work together to help you reach your goals and improvements you wish to see in your health.
When we conclude our work together, it is my hope that you will have not only achieved what you set out to do, but that you feel more equipped to shepherd your own health in the long term.
What Holistic Nutrition is not
Please remember, holistic nutrition is not a substitute for medical advice or for your family physician or other appropriate healthcare provider. If you suffer from a medical or pathological condition, you need to consult with an appropriate healthcare provider. A Registered Holistic Nutrition Practitioner is not trained nor licensed to diagnose or treat pathological conditions, illnesses, injuries, or diseases or prescribe medications.
